Corporations Hewitt Associates and ComEd Care About Children In Need, Partner with Glenwood School for Boys and Girls to Build a New Playground in Just One Day!

Glenwood, IL – May 1, 2008 - Glenwood School for Boys and Girls successfully completed Project One Day, One Playground on April 30th, by building a new playground for disadvantaged kids with the help of major corporate funders ComEd and Hewitt Associates. The new playground will provide more than 160 children at Glenwood with a fun place to play.

ComEd and Hewitt Associates each brought 100 employees to assemble vibrant orange, blue and yellow playground equipment, picnic tables and benches, and trashcan holders on Glenwood’s campus. Students and volunteers also painted a world map and new lines on two basketball courts. The playground equipment includes a spiral slide, swings, monorail, rock climbing wall and tire swing. The playground design was based on drawings Glenwood students provided during a Design Day event in March.

At the opening ceremony, Glenwood’s President and CEO, Sam Banks, expressed his gratitude to the hundreds of community-minded people who spent their day building a playground for disadvantaged kids. “I want to especially thank the volunteers who could’ve devoted their time anywhere else, but chose to help Glenwood’s kids by building this playground,” Banks said.

Hewitt Associates Account Executive and Glenwood Board Member, David Brost, said it was great to see so many smiling faces, eager to get started on a playground for very deserving children. “We understand the significance of play in a child’s well-rounded development. It is important for children to have a safe play space where they can exercise, increase confidence, build cognitive skills and, learn positive social skills. It’s also important for them to have a place where they can just be kids,” Brost said.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, ComEd’s Vice President of Customer Care and Glenwood Trustee, Phyllis Batson spoke. She shared the company’s highest priorities for giving and volunteerism, which include enhancing educational opportunities and improving the quality of life for those in ComEd’s service areas. Batson said, “Today’s effort to construct a playground is more than just building a magical place for boys and girls, but also planting a foundation for the fundamental characteristics of teamwork, sharing, and learning from one another.”

The Glenwood student body joined President Sam Banks in front of the new playground for the ribbon cutting. Glenwood’s children also created special gifts as a thank you for each volunteer.

Others in attendance during the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Glenwood staff, Glenwood Trustee, Craig Stern; Hewitt Associates Global Leader for Corporate Social Responsibility, Rosemary Keefe; Harvey Mayor Eric J. Kellogg and School District 152 Board President Tyrone Rogers.

The playground is the second that Glenwood, Hewitt Associates and KaBOOM! have built together. In 2008, Hewitt built a playground on Glenwood’s campus in St. Charles, IL. KaBOOM! is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing communities together to build playgrounds across America.
